Port Alberni (/ æ l ˈ b ɜːr n i /) is a city located on Vancouver Island in the province of British Columbia, Canada. The city lies within the Alberni Valley at the head of the Alberni Inlet, Vancouver Island's longest inlet. Port Alberni currently has a total population of 18,259.
Highway 4 enters the city limits of Port Alberni 2 km (1.2 mi) west of the main spur into the city, and 5 km (3 mi) later, exits Port Alberni via a bridge over the Somass River. Tofino was a strong advocate of the Trans-Canada Highway system, and this sign was erected in the hope that Highway 4 would become part of the TCH.
Glencallum Bay Lighthouse is a lighthouse on a point on the northernmost side of Glencallum Bay on the Isle of Bute. [1] [2] Its Gaelic name is the Rubh' An Eun which means the point of the birds. The lighthouse was built in 1911 by the Stevenson family business which built many of the lighthouses in Scotland. It is on the West Island Way. [3]
Barkley Sound, also known historically as Barclay Sound, is south of Ucluelet and north of Bamfield on the west coast of Vancouver Island and forms the entrance to the Alberni Inlet. The Broken Group archipelago lies in the sound. Barkley Sound is part of the traditional territory of the Nuu-cha-nulth First Nations.
