The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation is a federally recognized tribe of Mission Indians from Southern California, located in an unincorporated area of San Diego County just east of El Cajon. The Sycuan band are a Kumeyaay tribe, one of the four ethnic groups indigenous to San Diego County.
Sandoval was born on May 14, 1934, on the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation reservation. [1] She grew up speaking the Kumeyaay language as her first language. [2] Her mother, Ada Prieto, was also born on the Sycuan reservation. [2] Sandoval attended Dehesa Elementary and Grossmont High School in El Cajon, California. [2]
The endowment was established in 2005 with a $5 million gift from the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, and continual payments of $474,000 on a yearly basis.
