Haughton is located 15 miles (24 km) east of Bossier City and 17 miles (27 km) east of Shreveport. Interstate 20 touches the northwestern corner of the town, with access from Exit 33 (Elm Street). The plantation and an adjoining cemetery are located on Sligo Road, south of Haughton, Louisiana. Dr. Abel Skannal purchased the land and built a house on it in the early 1800s. Construction continued from 1838 to the early 1840s. The rear part of the house was modified in the 1960s, the facade of the house has remained the same since it was built.

One of them was Garcilaso de la Vega (c.1539–1616), a Spanish chronicler also known as "El Inca" because of his Incan mother. He was the record-keeper of the noted De Soto expedition that landed in present-day Florida on May 31, 1538.
