In organic chemistry, a methoxy group is the functional group consisting of a methyl group bound to oxygen. This alkoxy group has the formula R−O−CH 3 . On a benzene ring , the Hammett equation classifies a methoxy substituent at the para position as an electron-donating group , but as an electron-withdrawing group if at the meta position.
The enhanced nucleophilicity of anisole vs. benzene reflects the influence of the methoxy group, which renders the ring more electron-rich. The methoxy group strongly affects the pi cloud of the ring as a mesomeric electron donor, more so than as an inductive electron withdrawing group despite the electronegativity of the oxygen.
Methoxyacrylates hold significant importance in the field of agricultural fungicides, with a substantial market share. In 1999, this group of active ingredients accounted for over 10% of the fungicide market, with sales totaling US$620 million, led by azoxystrobin, which alone generated approximately US$415 million in sales. Methoxyflurane, sold under the brand name Penthrox among others, is an inhaled medication primarily used to reduce pain following trauma. [5] [6] It may also be used for short episodes of pain as a result of medical procedures. [4]
Methoxyacetic acid is a colorless, viscous, and corrosive liquid with a pungent odor which, at 7 °C, freezes to a mass similar to glacial acetic acid. Due to the low solvation energy of its methoxy group, methoxyacetic acid, with a pKa value of 3.57, is more acidic than acetic acid (pKa 4.757) and glycolic acid (pKa 3.832). [3]

The study involved 10 animals, five in the experimental group that engaged in regular physical activity and five in the control group that did not engage in physical exercise. The training regimen ...
They consist of a disubstituted benzene ring with methoxy group and one methyl group. All three are colorless flammable liquids which are soluble in organic solvents but poorly soluble in water. They are not of major commercial interest although they are precursors to the corresponding methoxybenzoic acids and methoxybenzaldehydes. [1]
