The department is responsible for national surveying and mapping. It is also the national focal point of GIS and Remote Sensing with representation in the Global Mapping Project organised by the International Steering Committee for Global Mapping (ISCGM). The head of the department is Surveyor General of Sri Lanka. [2]

The department, during the first fifty years, was mainly engaged in the survey of scattered allotments of land for sale to private parties. The first title plan was issued by the new department on 20 August 1800 surveyed by C. Schneider.

The Sri Lanka Administrative Service (SLAS) (Sinhala: ශ්රී ලංකා පරිපාලන සේවය; śrī laṁkā paripālana sēvaya) is the key administrative service of the Government of Sri Lanka, with civil servants working for both in the Central Government as well as in the provincial councils.
Sanghadasa Berugoda (c. 1934 – 2007) was the 38th Surveyor General of Sri Lanka. He was appointed in 1992, succeeding Thamotharam Somasekaram, and held the office until 1993. He was succeeded by N. C. Seneviratne. [1] Berugoda died in Adelaide, Australia in 2007 at the age of 73. [2]
E. M. Perera was the 36th Surveyor General of Sri Lanka. He was appointed in 1991, succeeding S. T. Herat , and held the office until 1991. He was succeeded by Thamotharam Somasekaram .

The roots of the Sri Lanka Artillery goes back to 1888, when on 12 April 1888 the Ceylon Artillery Volunteers was formed as a gun battery under the command of Captain C.E.H Symons of the Royal Artillery to man a gun battery equipped with BL 12-pounder 6 cwt guns.
