Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB) (Welsh: Bwrdd lechyd Prifysgol Bae Abertawe) is the local health board of NHS Wales for Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, in the south-west of Wales. Hywel Dda University Health Board (HDUHB) (Welsh: Bwrdd Iechyd Prifysgol Hywel Dda) is the local health board of NHS Wales for the west of Wales.Established on 1 October 2009 from the merger of the Hywel Dda NHS Trust, the Pembrokeshire Local Health Board, Ceredigion Local Health Board and Carmarthenshire Local Health Board.
The hospital, which was designed by Holder Mathias, [1] was built in the late 1980s and was completed in May 1990. [2] The hospital expanded when a new breast care unit opened in October 2010.
In 1978, the main building was found to have deteriorated dangerously; £1 million was spent on repairs. The Welsh Office revealed in 1981 that a further £7.7 million was required for repairs. [1] [14] In 2005, Base Structures completed a £1 million project by to construct a walkway joining separate parts of the hospital. [15]
The Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery, which was designed to provide care for the whole population of 2.3 million across West, Mid and South Wales, moved to the site from St Lawrence Hospital, Chepstow in 1994. [7] In 2015 the Health Board announced plans to expand the site with focus exclusively on the care of the sickest patients. [8]
The e-referral project was put in place to allow for a more cost-effective way of treating a bigger number of patients, increase productivity and to improve access to healthcare. There were two hundred general practitioner practices and one million residents originally involved in the project.
