Bridlington is a seaside town and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is on the Holderness part (Flamborough Head to the Humber estuary) of the Yorkshire Coast by the North Sea. The town is about 28 miles (45 km) north of Hull and 34 miles (55 km) east of York.
Bridlington Priory was founded around 1113 by Walter de Gant, for Augustinian Canons Regular, one of the earliest Augustinian houses in England, with an adjoining convent. Its foundation was confirmed in charters by King Henry I of England [ 2 ] [ 3 ] The site had formerly been a Saxon church and nunnery . [ 3 ]
Bridlington Lifeboat Station is a Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeboat station based in Bridlington, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Having been instituted in 1805, it is the oldest working RNLI lifeboat location in the Yorkshire and the Humber region.
Bridlington expanded as a resort at the start of the 20th century largely as a result of the railway. Direct trains ran from the industrial heartlands via Selby and Market Weighton in the summer. The new holiday market led to a huge expansion of the resort and the need for a larger station to take the long excursion trains.
The high school site became Bridlington Lower School and the current site was the Upper School. Most of the lower school site has become a housing estate, although the main building, visible from Quay Road, has been preserved and converted into flats. When a comprehensive it still had its girls' and boys' boarding house until the 1990s.
