The band is fronted by vocalist/guitarist Kirk Windstein, Crowbar's sole constant member. Infusing a slow, brooding doom metal sound with the aggression of hardcore punk , Crowbar along with other bands in the New Orleans heavy metal scene pioneered a style known as sludge metal , though Windstein himself has admitted a dislike for the term.
The band renamed themselves to Crowbar in mid-1991. Crowbar was originally signed by Mark Nawara to Pavement Music and released their debut album, Obedience thru Suffering , in 1991. Windstein's childhood friend Phil Anselmo (who at the time was with Pantera) produced their next effort, a self-titled album released in 1993.
He began touring as live bassist with Down in early 2011, replacing former bassist Rex Brown, before being added as a permanent member, performing live and in studio. Bruders is also a member of the New Orleans –based crust punk band Gasmiasma, Austin -based country band Pure Luck, and joined the doom metal band Saint Vitus in 2016.

Craig Nunenmacher is an American musician, best known as the former drummer for heavy metal bands Black Label Society and Crowbar.He joined BLS in July 2000 while playing for Crowbar, who were touring with BLS at the time.
Keenan was a founding member of Down in 1991 along with Pantera's Phil Anselmo, Eyehategod's Jimmy Bower, and Crowbar's Kirk Windstein and Todd Strange. In 1995, Down released their debut album, NOLA. The band went on indefinite hiatus in 1996 but returned three years later with Pantera bassist Rex Brown replacing Strange.
