Montecristo, also Monte Cristo (/ ˌ m ɒ n t i ˈ k r ɪ s t oʊ /, [1] Italian: [ˌmonteˈkristo]) and formerly Oglasa (Ancient Greek: Ὠγλάσσα, romanized: Ōglássa), is an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea and part of the Tuscan Archipelago. Administratively it belongs to the municipality of Portoferraio in the province of Livorno, Italy.
The island became internationally famous in the 19th century, when Alexandre Dumas used it as a setting for his novel The Count of Monte Cristo, published to widespread acclaim in 1844. In the novel, the main character Edmond Dantès (a commoner who later purchases the noble title of count ) and his mentor, Abbé Faria, were both imprisoned in it.
