Kinchafoonee Creek (/ k ɪ n tʃ ə ˈ f uː n iː / kinch-ə-FOO-nee) is a creek in southwest Georgia. [1] It originates near Buena Vista and flows southeasterly for 91.8 miles (147.7 km) [2] to the Flint River near Albany, Georgia. [1] Its name comes from the Creek word for "mortar nutshells", which refers to a type of nutcracker. [3]
The Flint River is fed by Kinchafoonee Creek just north of Albany, and by Ichawaynochaway Creek in southwestern Mitchell County, approximately 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Bainbridge. In addition to Lake Seminole, the Flint River is impounded approximately 15 miles (24 km) upstream from Albany to form the Lake Blackshear reservoir.
The route heads northeast, and crosses Kinchafoonee Creek before intersecting US 19/SR 3 in Smithville. East of Smithville, the route crosses Muckalee Creek before intersecting SR 377. It continues to the northeast to Leslie. In Leslie, the route has a brief (about 0.4 miles (0.64 km)) concurrency with SR 195.
The majority of Webster County, bordered to the southwest by State Route 520, is located in the Kinchafoonee-Muckalee sub-basin of the ACF River Basin (Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin). The southwestern corner of the county is located in the Ichawaynochaway Creek sub-basin of the same ACF River Basin.
