Rocky Knob is also home to Rock Castle Gorge, a 3,500 acres (14 km 2) gorge, and home to the Rock Castle Gorge National Recreation Trail. The monadnock itself rises 300 feet above the surrounding belt of hills and is formed of Carolina slate.
