The BMW E30 is the second generation of BMW 3 Series, which was produced from 1982 to 1994 and replaced the E21 3 Series. The model range included 2-door saloon (sometimes referred to as a coupé) and convertible body styles, [ 4 ] [ 5 ] as well as being the first 3 Series to be produced in 4-door saloon and wagon/estate body styles.
The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. M3 models have been produced for every generation of 3 Series since the E30 M3 was introduced in 1986. The initial model was available in a coupé body style, with a convertible body style made available soon after.
E30 coupé (front) E30 coupé (rear) On introduction in 1982, the E30 was produced solely in the 2-door sedan body style. Four-door sedan models were introduced in 1983, convertibles were introduced in 1985 and estate ("Touring") models were introduced in 1987. The E30 was the first 3 Series to be available in wagon and 4-door sedan body styles.
The M20 began to be phased out following the introduction of the M50 engine in 1990. The final M20 engines were fitted to the E30 3 Series wagon (estate) and convertible model built in April 1993. [3] The M20 was the basis for the BMW M21 diesel engine. [4] It is also loosely related to the BMW M70 V12 petrol engine.
Only 62 cars were made from 1987 to 1990. [55] The E30 BMW 333i was developed by Alpina for BMW South Africa. It was based on the 325i chassis and M30B32 engine, with numerous Alpina components common to the B6. Customers had to choose between power steering or air conditioning because of limited space in the engine bay.
The BMW 315 is easily distinguishable from other E21 models by its headlamps: Instead of halogen bulbs, it has R2 twin-filament bulbs. The 315 was the base model from March 1981 to 1983 and remained on sale up into 1984 for some markets, alongside the new E30.

All-wheel drive was not available for the E36, unlike the previous (E30) and successive (E46) generations. The E36 was named in Car and Driver magazine's 10Best list for every year it was on sale. [4] Following the introduction of its successor, the E46 3 Series in 1998, the E36 began to be phased out and was eventually replaced in 1999.
