The Barnfield Estate is a densely populated and highly multicultural area. In the census 2011, 42.8% of all residents stated they were 'black', 16.3% were listed as 'white', and 45.5% as other (Asian or mixed race). 30.2% of residents were born outside of the UK, according to the census 2011, many originating from Eastern Europe or Somalia.
The business was founded by Sir Stanley Clarke CBE and his brother-in-law Jim Leavesley in 1966 as a property development business called Clarke St. Modwen. [2] In 1986 the management reversed the business into Redman Heenan International plc, a listed former engineering concern that had become a shell company. [2]
The Estate was not known as The Progress Estate until 1925, when the Office of Works sold it to Progress Estates Ltd, a subsidiary of the Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society. The site was selected for three reasons. First, it was the nearest available land of the required acreage to Woolwich.
Durkan Group bought the Woolwich site by public tender in 2006 and redevelopment started in 2008. [6] The Woolwich buildings, several of which are grade II listed, [14] were converted and extended into 334 houses and apartments, including 150 for a housing association.
