Västergötland (Swedish: [ˈvɛ̂sːtɛrˌjøːtland] ⓘ), also known as West Gothland or the Latinized version Westrogothia in older literature, [2] is one of the 25 traditional non-administrative provinces of Sweden (landskap in Swedish), situated in the southwest of Sweden.
The original four ships of the class (Västergötland, Hälsingland, Södermanland, and Östergötland) were built between 1983 and 1988 by Kockums AB.The latter two have undergone comprehensive refits, including the insertion of a new hull section with an air-independent propulsion system equipped with Stirling engines.
Between 2000 and 2004, Östergötland and Södermanland underwent extensive modifications, were extended by 12 meters and fitted with air-independent Stirling engines. At the same time, the submarines would be modified to handle international missions with operations in hot and salty waters.
