The complex is officially known as the Joseph A. Langone, Jr. Memorial Center; it was named for the Massachusetts state senator in 1962. The courthouse, part of the Boston Government Service Center, was built in 1998. It holds the Central Division of the Boston Municipal Court , as well as the court's administrative offices. The building was designed by Kallmann McKinnell & Wood and is named after Edward W. Brooke .

The adjoining 8-acre (3.2 ha) City Hall Plaza is sometimes used for parades and rallies and, most memorably, the region's championship sports teams, the Boston Celtics , Boston Bruins , New England Patriots , and the Boston Red Sox , have been feted in front of City Hall.
