Carmarthen Borough Council was a local authority in the central part of Carmarthenshire, Wales created in 1835 under the Municipal Corporations Act 1835. It succeeded the Mayor, Burgesses, and Commonalty of the Borough of Carmarthen established by a Royal Charter of 1604.
The council meets and has its main offices at County Hall in Carmarthen, which had been completed in 1955 for the original Carmarthenshire County Council, and served as the headquarters of Dyfed County Council between 1974 and 1996. [28] The council has customer service centres in Ammanford, Carmarthen and Llanelli. [29]
Carmarthen Borough Council was a local authority created by the 1835 Municipal Corporations Act and replaced the ancient borough that had existed since medieval times. The Council consisted of 24 members, eighteen of whom were elected councillors and the remaining six were aldermen.
Carmarthen Municipal Borough; Carmarthen Rural District; Newcastle Emlyn Rural District; Newcastle Emlyn Urban District; Carmarthen district was abolished 22 years later under the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994, with the area becoming part of the new Carmarthenshire unitary authority on 1 April 1996. The borough of Carmarthen was abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972. A community called Carmarthen was created covering the area of the former borough, with its community council taking the name Carmarthen Town Council. District-level functions passed to the new Carmarthen District Council.
He was elected to the Carmarthen Borough Council as a Conservative shortly after and then to the aldermanic bench, a position he relinquished when it became necessary for him to seek re-election at the hands of the ratepayers.
