The structure was built c. 1908 to house the Welch Military Academy. The building took its present form in 1929 under the direction of architect Fred Wallace of Marchall and Brown. Wallace attended the University of Missouri for two years and joined Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. It was restored between 1965 and 1966 after a fire.
