In 1817-19 it was reconstructed to serve as the Warsaw city hall, replacing the dismantled old city hall. In 1863 the building was damaged by a fire set by demonstrating Polish patriots during the January 1863 Uprising. [1] In 1864-69 the building was reconstructed in a Neo-Renaissance style. At that time, the characteristic tower was added.
It sits on an elevator platform that raises the light through a hatch in the roof; today it is accessed via a spiral staircase in the council chambers.
