Borrow Direct is an interlibrary loan service that allows member university students, faculty, and staff with library borrowing privileges and active e-mail accounts to borrow books directly from the libraries of the other member universities. The patrons' home library bears the cost of the service and there is no charge to patrons.

The John T. Shuman Library occupied space on the first and second floors of the Learning Resources Center in the Lifelong Education Center. The Children's Learning Center is located in the area that was the former library. Groundbreaking on the new Library occurred late 2004. Construction began on January 24, 2005. [1] [2]

The library's first permanent location was in Old Main, with 1,500 books in agriculture and the sciences. [1] In 1904, the library was moved to the Carnegie Building (then "Carnegie Library"), which provided a 50,000 book capacity. By 1940, the library's collection had grown to 150,000, overcrowding Carnegie by three times its capacity.
The Penn Libraries also acquire publications in several of the lesser-known languages of the Subcontinent such as Baluchi, Brahui, Meitei, Newari, Pushto, and various tribal languages and dialects. The Libraries also acquire materials pertaining to the study of South Asia in English, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, and Russian.
Van Pelt Library houses strong Area Studies collections in African, Japanese, Latin American, Chinese, Middle East, South Asia, and Judaica and Ancient Near East Studies. The Henry Charles Lea Library is located on the 6th floor of Van Pelt Library. [1] The library holds the Weigle Information Commons, located on the west side of the 1st floor.
