The following are lists in a series of Recorded Texas Historic Landmarks (RTHLs) arranged by county as designated by the Texas Historical Commission and local county historical commissions in Texas. Purchase and display of a historical marker is a required component of the RTHL designation process.
The South Texas region is an area of 28 counties defined by the Texas Comptroller for economic reporting in 2022, as mapped here. The region included 2020 population of 2.4, or 8.3 percent of Texas' population, with about 32 percent in Hidalgo County (which includes McAllen) alone.
Sources used to compile the list include an annual survey of the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA) in the United Kingdom; the U.S. National Park Service list of National Monuments, Patrimonio Nacional of Spain, and the Italian, French, and Russian Ministries of Culture.
