Muhammad XII was the son of Abu l-Hasan Ali, Sultan of the Emirate of Granada whom he succeeded in 1482, [4] as a result of both court intrigue and unrest amongst the population at large. He fled Granada on 13 April 1362 (17 Jumada al-Thani 763), [a] accompanied by his entourage, including the chief of the Volunteers of the Faith, Idris ibn Uthman ibn al-Ula, taking most of the royal treasury. Muhammad V entered the Alhambra three days later and was recognised as Sultan.
