Atco is a small unincorporated community on the northwestern side of Cartersville in southern Bartow County, Georgia, United States. [1] There are numerous baseball and soccer complexes in the area, primarily along Sugar Valley and Cassville Roads, making it a popular destination for subdivisions.
Bartow County was created from the Cherokee lands of the Cherokee County territory on December 3, 1832, and named Cass County, after General Lewis Cass (1782–1866), Secretary of War under President Andrew Jackson, Minister to France and Secretary of State under President James Buchanan, [3] who was instrumental in the removal of Native Americans from the area.

The Seaboard Air Line fully absorbed the A&BAL in 1909. Once the Seaboard gained full control of the line, they designated the line from Atlanta to Birmingham as the Birmingham Subdivision. Track from Rockmart to Cartersville was designated as the Cartersville Subdivision. All tunnels on the line were eventually concrete-lined, starting in 1909.
The community is located along Allatoona Creek, 6 miles (9.7 km) southeast of Cartersville. [1] It was once a small mining community until a dam was erected at the base of the Etowah River, completely flooding the town of Allatoona. It is today perhaps best known as the site of the Battle of Allatoona. [2]

Adairsville is an exurban city at the northwest edge of metro Atlanta, at (34.368925, −84.928212 U.S. Route 41 passes through the city, leading north to Calhoun and south to Cartersville.
In February 2019, the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved a study to determine the need for various improvements along a section of the road. The Georgia Department of Transportation currently plans to expand the route from two to four lanes by the year 2037; the board's chairman called that timeline "completely unacceptable."
