The Sisters of Mercy is a religious institute for women in the Roman Catholic Church. It was founded in 1831 in Dublin, Ireland, by Catherine McAuley . As of 2019, the institute has about 6200 sisters worldwide, organized into a number of independent congregations .
Built by Reverend Thomas J. Dalton, the Sacred Heart Convent and Holy Angels Orphanage was dedicated May 2, 1865 by Bishop Eugene O'Connell. Under the Sisters of Mercy, it served from 1866 to 1932 as the first orphanage of the Northern Mines. It functioned as an academy from 1868 to 1965 and as a convent from 1866 to 1968. [12] [13]
In 1890, the Sisters of Mercy opened a five-bed dispensary called St. Joseph's in downtown San Diego, with the permission of Bishop Francisco Mora y Borrell. [4] The dispensary was replaced by a three-story hospital in Hillcrest called St. Joseph's Sanitarium in 1891, which was renamed to St. Joseph's Hospital in 1904. [5]
The Sisters of Mercy had named a nearby hill Mount Carmel after a Biblical place [11] near Jerusalem [9] when they came to San Diego in 1890s and were given 1,000 acres in the area by the McGonigle family in exchange for health care (Sisters established the Mercy Hospital). [12]

She wanted her service to the poor to endure, so she founded the Sisters of Mercy in 1831. [2] The organization expanded to the United States in 1843, and by 1854, the Sisters of Mercy had settled in San Francisco, California. [3]

Members serve in the Archdioceses of New York and Detroit and the Dioceses of Cleveland, Fort Wayne/South Bend, and San Diego. The sisters arrived in England in 1914, where their main apostolate had been education. They founded the Sacred Heart Convent school in Swaffham.
