It was the second instrumental single to hit number one in 1962 on both the US and UK weekly charts. [note 1] Later in 1962, Meek produced a vocal version, "Magic Star", sung by Kenny Hollywood. It was released as a single by Decca Records (cat. nr F11546), with "The Wonderful Story of Love" on the B-side, written by Geoff Goddard.
They also recorded and released a version of "Telstar" in the mid-1970s. In 1996, Ray Randall wrote and recorded a three-track CD with Bryan Irwin and Stuart Taylor, using the band name Ray Randall's Tornados, as a tribute to the late Joe Meek, 30 years after Meek's death. Randall has since recorded a solo album entitled Polly Swallow (1997).

"Love Is Blue" was the first instrumental to hit number 1 on the Billboard charts since the Tornados hit with "Telstar" in 1962 and the only American number-one single to be recorded in France. This 2011 photograph shows the original plaque erected at the birthplace in Newent, Gloucestershire of legendary songwriter and producer Joe Meek, best known for writing and producing The Tornados' chart-topping hit "Telstar". 17 August – Instrumental "Telstar" by The Tornados is released in the UK. It will eventually be the first recording by a British group to reach the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, proving a precursor of the British Invasion.
