Southport is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 9,684 according to the 2020 census. [ 2 ] The town is located in the southwestern corner of Chemung County and is southwest of the city of Elmira .
There have been settlements in the area now comprising Southport since the Domesday Book, and some parts of the town have names of Viking origin. [12] The earliest recorded human activity in the region was during the Middle Stone Age when mesolithic hunter-gatherers were attracted by the abundant red deer and elk populations, as well as the availability of fish, shellfish, and woodland.
Southport is recognised as the central business district of the City of Gold Coast. It has the city's largest area of office space at 103,818 square metres (1,117,490 sq ft). In the past, Southport was the central entertainment location of the Gold Coast. In current times it is set apart from the normal tourist hub of the Gold Coast.
Just north of Southport, the PRR shared track with the Erie Railroad through downtown Elmira. The yard also served the New York Central Railroad, which had trackage rights on the PRR north of Elmira. It was a major crew terminal for the PRR especially, and was quite large, with extensive facilities. It covered most of Southport.

Southport is a city in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States, near the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Its population was 3,971 as of the 2020 census . [ 4 ] The current mayor, Rich Alt, was elected to a two-year term in November 2023.

Southport became a leading coastal port on Long Island Sound, its ships carrying produce and goods back and forth to New York City. A measure of Southport's success is the fact that throughout the 1800s it possessed the only two banks in town. However, competition from steamboats and the railroad took their toll on prosperity.
