The Club is situated on 158 acres with 125 acres devoted to the golf course. The plans for Quail Creek Golf & Country Club began in 1960 and the golf course and clubhouse design and construction followed in 1961–62. [1] Johnston envisioned turning pasture land into a residential area and a golf country club.
The course and slope rating is 79.3/155 from the tournament tees and 76.4/153 from the championship tees. Each hole has its own name, and some holes are named after famous courses or golf holes. The signature hole is the fifth hole (named Oak Tree), a 592-yard par five where players must avoid the oak tree that is used in the club's logo.
The course was founded in 1911 by 300 Oklahoma City residents. The course, designed by architect Perry Maxwell, measures 6,861 yards from the championship tees and plays to a par 71 with a course rating of 73.5 and a slope of 130. The course features tree-lined fairways throughout the rolling hills.
Karsten Creek was opened on May 9, 1994, and earned the distinction of "Best New Public Course for 1994" by Golf Digest and has earned numerous accolades since. Golf Digest honored Karsten Creek again in 1998, this time awarding the course its first five-star rating, giving Karsten Creek the distinction of being among only ten courses in the United States to earn such an honor.
