The first terminal building was a one-story wood and tar paper structure that looked like a warehouse. The landing strips and taxiways were mown grass. Still, it handled enough passengers in 1930 for Tulsa to claim that it had the busiest airport in the world. The Tulsa Municipal Airport handled 7,373 passengers in February 1930 and 9,264 in April.
In the 1950s, the city of Tulsa decided to build a second airport to alleviate congestion around Tulsa International Airport. A consulting group hired by the city performed a site selection study. In February, 1955, the group recommended a site on the west side of the Arkansas River, just north of Jenks, Oklahoma. Construction began in 1957.
Harvey Young Airport, having previously been annexed into Tulsa city limits, was denied federal disaster aid. Young in the aftermath assaulted a Tulsa police officer who arrested him for burning the debris. He was fined $300 for the assault and $50 for burning trash. Young suffered a stroke and died at age 67 on February 16, 1985.
