Southern Arkansas University began its football program in 1911 when the school was known as the Third District Agricultural School. The Muleriders first conference affiliation came in 1930 when the school joined the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference. SAU competed in the AIC until moving from NAIA to the NCAA Division II in 1995.
Three of his SAU teams made appearances in the NAIA World Series (1983, 1987, 1991). The 1987 team finished third in the World Series with a record of 46–7. Goodheart's teams also won six district titles and 2 area titles. According to a press release when Goodheart was elected into the Southern Arkansas University Sports Hall of Fame:
SAU was in a transitional period during the 1995 & 1996 seasons. However, any fears that Mulerider fans has about SAU's ability to compete at the NCAA Division II level were put to rest during the 1997 season. Coach Steve Roberts led SAU to the Gulf South Conference Championship in 1997 with an overall record of 9–2.

Brad Smiley (born June 19, 1973) is an American college football coach. He is the head football coach at Southern Arkansas University, a position he has held since 2022. [1] [2] [3] He served as the head football coach at Trinity Valley Community College from 2007 to 2017.
The Southern Arkansas Muleriders softball team represents Southern Arkansas University in NCAA Division II college softball. SAU has competed in the Great American Conference (GAC) since 2011. [2] Upon reorganizing the team in 1999, SAU was a member of the Western Division of the Gulf South Conference until joining the GAC in 2011.
