Founded in 1960 as the NYU School of Social Work, the school was renamed the Silver School of Social Work in honor of NYU Alumni Constance and Martin Silver who pledged $50 million to the School of Social Work in 2007. At the time, it was the largest known donation to a school of social work in the history of the United States. [1]
School social work in America began during the school year 1907–08 and was established simultaneously in New York City, Boston, Chicago and New Haven, Connecticut. [5] At its inception, school social workers were known, among other things, as advocates for new immigrants and welfare workers of equity and fairness for people of lower socioeconomic class as well as home visitors.
The school opened in 1993 with Harriet Pitts as principal. [2] The school's student body is 70 percent African American and 26 percent Hispanic. About 70 percent are from economically disadvantaged families. [1] After moving four times in its first 11 years, it moved into a new $38 million 6-story 90,000 square foot school building in 2004.
In 1904, it was expanded into the first full-time full-year course of graduate study in social work, and later a two-year course, at the newly renamed New York School of Philanthropy. [8] [2] The name of the School was changed in 1919 to the New York School of Social Work. [2] In 1931, the School moved to 122 East 22nd Street. [9]
