Russell Gulch, is a former mining town, now largely a ghost town, in Gilpin County, Colorado, United States. [1] Although the population was once much larger than today, and most of the larger commercial buildings stand empty, the town is not completely deserted.

By 1860, as many as 10,000 prospectors had flocked to the town, then known as Mountain City, [9] and surrounding prospects, but most soon left, many returning east. [10] The 1900 census showed 3,114 people. The year 1863 brought the first attempt by hard rock miners to form a hard rock miners' union.
