For words to appear here, they must appear in their own entry in a dictionary; words that occur only as part of a longer phrase are not included. Proper nouns are not included in the list. There are, in addition, many place names and personal names, mostly originating from Arabic-speaking countries, Albania, or China, that have a Q without a U.
This was raised on AfD (VfD as it then was). The consensus was to keep it here, since it contains more than a list of definitions, and is about the words themselves more than the things they represent. Printed dictionaries do not contain lists of word curios, so Wiktionary should not either. Soo 16:10, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
cwtch (a hiding place or cubby hole) is also from Welsh (albeit a recent word influenced by English, and used almost exclusively in the variant of English spoken in Wales, not in standard English), and crwth and cwtch are the longest English dictionary words without a, e, i, o, u, y according to Collins Dictionary.
Added some of the references that I had listed, and rewrote to eliminate the non-static list of words (the acceptable word list changes every 5 years or so). Please rewrite my in-eloquence. Don't mix date formats in the references section (e.g. Encarta)
Where ever there is a Q there is a U too; Most frequently u follows q. e.g.: Que, queen, question, quack, quark, quartz, quarry, quit, Pique, torque, macaque, exchequer.
