I picked up a Ruger American Predator in 350 Legend for Ohio deer season (there is a thread in hunting rifles). It shot well with factory loads but I like to handload, and shoot a lot, so naturally wanted to load for this. Time is short before season, as are components and load data, for...
The 350 Legend is indeed a .355 bore with SAAMI bullet specs of .354" to .357" bullet diameter. More than that limitation, the chambering specs favor bullets with rifle-like ogives. One reason for this is the concern that 357 handgun bullets are too lightly constructed to perform well for hunting at 350 legend velocities.
I think it's rather cool that several companies out there are trying to turn out legitimate hunting bullets or ammo for suppressed use. The .350 Legend looks like a viable candidate, as does the 450 bushmaster. I saw where Hornady was making a 395gr subsonic hunting load for the 450. That's a lot of whump, even if doesn't expand that much.
The included taper crimp is the way to go to get a consistent neck tension and prevent bullet set back, all while not messing up the case mouth which the cartridge head spaces on. 5.) People complain about the .355 bullet diameter, however I have decided is a non issue. The factory .350 legend projectiles are made to work at 350 legend velocities.
There is some solid 357 AR Max load data here, which is what the 350 Legend was built on, if that helps. They will never admit it but the 357 AR Max is the original 350 Legend.
With limited reloading data available, I have a question with regard to Velocity/Pressure and a safe load. I have been using LiLGun, Hornady 170 SP bullets, CCI 450 primers, and Winchester brass (all I can find). The rifle is a bolt action with a 23" barrel. Chronograph is a Labradar. Hodgdon data (24" barrel):
They arrived quickly and are a good looking bullet with polymer tip and three vertical cuts for expansion. Being all copper they are very long for weight, with a crimping groove. The website lists 23-25 grains of H110 for data which is much lower than lead bullets of this weight. Hogden data lists 27-28.2 for H110 and a max velocity of 2495.
I put together a 350 legend AR, The most accurate loads out of my gun are with the Hornaday 170gn.SP over 27gn. of LIL Gun w/ CCI BR-4sr primers. I also got good groups out of Lehigh Defense 150gn. Controlled Chaos bullets and Lehigh Extreme Defense 118gn. bullets over 28gn.s of the same powder and primer with NO bullet drop at 200yd.s!
The 350 Legend is an interesting little round. I spent some time shooting a .357 max single shot this past weekend and would love to have one in a lever or bolt gun....that could run 38's and regular 357's. Checked the 77/357 and the mag's to short, didn't look at the Rossi to check travel on it but I'd guess it's to short as well.
Reporting on my experience shooting and reloading with the 350 Legend. The rifle is a bolt action setup I had put together. As for handloads, I have only experimented with LiL'Gun and Hornady 170 SP bullets. I have been reloading with a Redding Die Set. I have not crimped any loads.
