Location of notable power stations in Pakistan Nuclear, wind/solar, coal/oil/gas, hydroelectric Pakistan has a total installed power generation capacity of 49,270 MW as of 13 September, 2024 which includes 28,766 MW thermal, 11,519 MW hydroelectric, 1,838 MW wind, 780 MW solar, 249 MW bagasse, 3,620 MW nuclear and 2,498 MW of net metering capacity.
This study enabled PMD to identify potential "wind corridors" where economically feasible wind farm could be established. The Gharo-Jhimpir wind corridor in Sindh was identified as the most lucrative site for wind power plants. [5] The wind power potential covered an area of 9700 km 2 with a gross wind power potential of 43000 MW. [6]
This has reduced the total capacity of the Wind Plant to 50.4 MW. The primary reason for the problem is that the VENSYS 62 turbines were not designed to operate in the high temperatures experienced in Pakistan, which can reach up to 50°C in the summer. Currently, 45 wind power projects of around 3200 MW capacity are under process in Pakistan. [6]
Around 10.57% of Pakistan’s total installed power generation capacity (in 2020) comes renewables (wind, solar and biogas). [1] Most of Pakistan's renewable energy comes from hydroelectricity . As per the vision of the Prime Minister, there is the aim to “induct 20% of RE by the year 2025 and 30% of RE by the year 2030.” [ 2 ]
The Zorlu Energy Putin Power Plant is the first wind power plant in Pakistan. The wind farm is being developed in Jhimpir, by Zorlu Energy Pakistan the local subsidiary of a Turkish company. The total cost of the project is $136 million.[3] Completed in 2012, it has a total capacity of around 56MW.
The plant will produce approximately 50 megawatts of electricity upon completion, and will consist of 33 wind turbines each capable of generating 1.5 MW of electricity. [3] Turbines will be sourced from China Ming Yang Wind Power Group Limited [4] and were jointly developed with the German firm aerodyn. [5] [3]
