Thymol (also known as 2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol, IPMP), C 10 H 14 O, is a natural monoterpenoid phenol derivative of p-Cymene, isomeric with carvacrol.It occurs naturally in the oil of thyme, and it is extracted from Thymus vulgaris (common thyme), ajwain, [4] and various other plants as a white crystalline substance of a pleasant aromatic odor and strong antiseptic properties.
Thymus vulgaris (common thyme, English thyme, summer thyme, winter thyme, French thyme, [23] or garden thyme) [24] is a commonly used culinary herb. It also has medicinal uses. Common thyme is a Mediterranean perennial which is best suited to well-drained soils and full sun.
Beyond adverse effects from the herb itself, "adulteration, inappropriate formulation, or lack of understanding of plant and drug interactions have led to adverse reactions that are sometimes life threatening or lethal." [3]

It is cultivated in gardens across the world. Caraway thyme is difficult to grow from seed, so it is usually purchased as young plants 5–10 cm high, in small pots. Caraway thyme contains an essential oil and the plant has antiseptic, deodorant and disinfectant uses. It also has uses in perfumery, as a mouth wash and as a traditional medicine. [2]
