The original east half of the Hotel Jefferson was designed by Barnett, Haynes & Barnett; the Classical Revival structure features terra cotta decorations. The hotel was opened to the public for the first time on April 2, 1904, for a charity ball sponsored by the St. Louis chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy and the Confederate Memorial Society. The hotel went through several name changes: Missouri Hotel, Veranda Hotel, and finally the Union Hotel following the Civil War. The Lohman and Union Hotel buildings came to be used for storage, tenement lodgings, and a shoe factory before being acquired by the state in 1976.
