"The Contraband Cow" is a classic science fiction story by L. Sprague de Camp.It was first published in the magazine Astounding Science Fiction for July, 1942. [1] [2] It first appeared in book form in the hardcover collection The Wheels of If and Other Science Fiction (Shasta, 1948); [1] [2] the collection was reprinted in paperback by Berkley Books in 1970. The film was based on the 1965 short story, "Johnny Lingo and the Eight-Cow Wife", written by author Patricia McGerr and published in Woman's Day magazine.
