Maloji Bhonsale (c. 1552 - 1605) was a Maratha chief who served the Ahmadnagar Sultanate. [1] He was the father of Shahaji Raje and the grandfather of Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire .
The dynasty was founded in 1577 by Maloji Bhosale, a predominant general or sardar of Malik Ambar of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate. [9] In 1595 or 1599, Maloji was given the title of Raja by Bahadur Nizam Shah, the ruler of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate. [10] He was later granted was given the jagir of Pune, Elur (Verul), Derhadi, Kannarad and Supe.

Like his father Maloji, Shahaji served in the army of Malik Ambar, the prime minister of Ahmadnagar Sultanate. At the time of Maloji's death in 1622, 26-year old Shahaji was a minor commander in Malik Ambar's army. [10] By 1625, he held the high military position of Sar Lashkar, as suggested by a letter sent from Pune on 28 July. [11]
In 1595, a Maratha chief named Maloji Bhosale, the grandfather of Shivaji Bhosale, was ennobled by the Ahmadnagar Sultan, Bahadur Nizam Shah and he gave him Shivneri and Chakan. Shivaji was born at the fort on 19 February 1630, and spent his childhood there.

Santaji belonged to the Ghorpade clan, a senior branch of the Bhosale clan.The Ghorpades were initially known as Bhosales.
