Do not put quotations in italics. Quotation marks (or block quoting) alone are sufficient and the correct ways to denote quotations. Italics should only be used if the quoted material would otherwise call for italics. Use italics within quotations to reproduce emphasis that exists in the source material or to indicate the use of non-English words.

The quotation must be useful and aid understanding of the subject; irrelevant quotations should be removed. All quotations must be attributed to their sources. Unlike fair-use images, quotations are permitted on talk pages and project pages where they are useful for discussion but the requirements listed above should still be observed.
When quoting a quotation that itself contains a quotation, alternate between using double and single quotes for each quotation. See § For a quotation within a quotation for details. When quoting text from non-English languages, the outer punctuation should follow the Manual of Style for English quote marks .
Since quotations are already marked by quotation marks or indentations, they need not be italicized. It is probably best to use the "double quotes" for most quotations, as they are easier to read on the screen. Use 'single quotes' for "quotations 'within' quotations," or to mark words for attribution.
Alternative #4 (italics) has the additional disadvantage of being ambiguous without added quote marks (e.g. Medieval Criticism, Science and the World vs. Medieval Criticism, Science and the World). But the quotation marks in the first case would be superfluous if we're capitalizing, and they aren't creative works, but multi-party events/activities.
This difficulty does not arise for double quotes, and this is one of the reasons the latter are recommended. For this reason, I often change single quotes to doubles except in the cases of nested quotations and (arguably) direct quotations using single quotes (though MOS:QUOTE appears to support changing these where possible).—
