The rear suspension design used a live axle (solid axle - which was a GM corporate 10 bolt differential with an 8.5" ring gear) located by leaf springs (shared with the 1968-74 and 1975-79 X platform) damped with tubular hydraulic shock absorbers.
Distinguishing it from the GM 14-bolt 9.5-inch ring gear rear differential is the latter's utilization of C-clips to retain axles, differing from the free-floating axle mechanism of its heavy-duty counterpart.
The GM 9.25 IFS has been the main front differential in Four-wheel drive 3/4 Ton and 1 Ton GM trucks since 1988. The Dana 60 solid axle front end was used selectively in trucks with a higher GVWR from 1988 to 1991. The original Saginaw 9.5 differential, ring and pinion were modified to work with the independent front suspension.
2" front and rear lift; 3.5" wider stance; 31" Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac off-road tires; Exclusive ZR2 17 x 8-inch aluminum alloy wheels; Modified rear axle with a 3.42 ratio; Front and rear electronic locking differentials; Multimatic™ shocks (DSSV) Tubular rocker protection; Modified front and rear bumpers for better off-road obstacle ...
The Dana 44 rear axle first saw use in the 1940s and is still in use today. The Dana 44 has a GAWR up to 3,500 lb (1,600 kg) and is a semi-floating type, having one bearing on the end of the axle shaft which carries the weight of the vehicle on the axle and also allows axle rotation.
The 1984 Hurst/Olds and 1985–87 4-4-2 were equipped with an 8.5-inch GM corporate differential and all were equipped with 3.73:1 ring and pinion final drive gears. Rather than using the weaker 7.5-inch rear differential found in the Monte Carlo SS, these models used the same stout unit found in the Buick Grand National.
