Les Schwab Tires entered the Denver metropolitan area with five stores in October 2012, the first in Colorado, bringing the total number of company owned stores to 374. The name of the business changed to "Les Schwab Tire Centers" in 1956, dropping the OK franchise. [5] From this grew a tire empire based in Prineville that had 34 stores in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho in 1971, [ 7 ] and 410 stores in the western U.S. and $1.6 billion in annual sales by 2007. The site is on the western edge of the city, near the state border with Washington. It is fronted by Pullman Road, State Highway 8 , which becomes State Route 270 in Washington and connects to Pullman , the other chief city on the Palouse , seven miles (11 km) west.

Pullman leaders were determined to secure the new college and offered 160 acres (0.65 km 2) of land for its campus. Idaho Territory had established its land grant college in 1889; the University of Idaho was to be in neighboring Moscow. On April 18, 1891, the site selection commission appointed by Washington's governor chose Pullman.
