The premise of the book is that everyone who has ever died (up to the time in which the book is set, which seems to be about the time of its publication) has gone to Styx, the river that circles the underworld. The book begins with Charon, ferryman of the Styx being startled—and annoyed—by the arrival of a houseboat on the Styx.
In the following year, the film version of the novel was released as Siddhartha, starring Shashi Kapoor and directed by Conrad Rooks. Musical compositions based on the novel have included Claude Vivier's symphonic poem, Siddhartha (1976), [10] [11] and Pete Townshend's song "The Ferryman", written for an amateur dramatisation in June 1976.

Aristotle mentions in his Meteorologica how Aesop once teased a ferryman by relating to him a myth concerning Charybdis. With one gulp of the sea she brought the mountains to view; islands appeared after the next. The third is yet to come and will dry the sea altogether, thus depriving the ferryman of his livelihood.
