The Golf GTI is a hot hatchback version that is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine (TSI) producing 245 PS (180 kW; 241 hp) and 370 N⋅m (273 lbf⋅ft). The bodywork is nearly identical to the GTE, however the GTI is equipped with different wheels, badges, and red grille accents.
The installation position of the engines has also been optimised. Just as in the diesels, the petrol engines are now mounted with the exhaust side facing backwards and tilted at an angle of 12 degrees. The weight of these petrol engines made of die-cast aluminium is only 97 kg (214 lb) for the 1.2 TSI and 106 kg (234 lb) for the 1.4 TSI.

The Golf GTI "Wörthersee 09" is a concept car based on the Golf GTI. 2.0-liter TSI. Its engine is rated at 155 kW; 208 bhp (211 PS), with a 0–100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration time of 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 238 km/h (148 mph).
