The company quartermaster sergeant wore three chevrons with a single straight tie in worsted. Although worn by volunteer cavalry from 1862, this rank badge was not incorporated into United States military regulations until 1866. The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the Quartermaster Corps School on 16 Dec 1929. It was redesignated for the U.S. Army Quartermaster School on 20 Dec 1967. On 9 Jun 1981 the insignia was amended to extend authorization for wear to personnel assigned to the U.S. Army Quartermaster Center.
