Polo, considered by some to be world's oldest team sport, has a long history in the New York area, especially on Long Island. In 1876, James Gordon Bennett, a noted American publisher, introduced the sport of polo to New York City. He organized the first polo match in the United States at Dickel's Riding Academy at 39th Street and Fifth Avenue.
