The Rajarata University of Sri Lanka was established as the eleventh University in Sri Lanka and was opened on 31 January 1996 by President Chandrika Kumaratunga. Over the years, the university has developed to become a centre of excellence in higher education in the North Central Province as well as in Sri Lanka.

The University of Sri Lanka was a public university in Sri Lanka. Established in 1972 by amalgamating the four existing universities, it was the only university in Sri Lanka from 1972 until 1978. The university was based at six campuses in Colombo, Peradeniya, Sri Jayewardenepura, Kelaniya, Moratuwa and Jaffna.

Jayasumana was a pioneering academic staff member of the Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka. He joined the Rajarata University medical faculty as a junior lecturer in 2008 and was promoted to the post of senior lecturer in 2015. Jayasumana became a professor in pharmacology in 2016 at the age of 36.
