Lake Winnibigoshish is a body of water in north central Minnesota in the Chippewa National Forest. Its name comes from the Ojibwe language Wiinibiigoonzhish , a diminutive and pejorative form of Wiinibiig , meaning "filthy water" (i.e., "brackish water").
The Leech Lake Reservation has a significant non-native population due in part to the allotment and sale of reservation lands in the late nineteenth century. In 2020, the racial makeup of the reservation was 49.3% White , 43.8% Native American , 0.1% Black or African American , 0.1% Asian , 0.4% from other races , and 6.3% from two or more races.
The 56,470 acres (22,850 ha) [1] Lake Winnibigoshish is located entirely within the forest; additionally the forest has public access to Leech Lake and Cass Lake. Fish species found in the lakes within the forest include walleye, northern pike, yellow perch, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie and bluegill.
Through additional treaties with the United States, the Leech Lake and Lake Winnibigoshish reservations were nearly doubled in size in the late nineteenth century. When the White Earth Reservation was created in 1867, the western Pillagers living about Otter Tail Lake agreed to relocate to that reservation so they would no longer be landless.
