Doniphan County is the northeasternmost county in the U.S. state of Kansas. Its county seat is Troy, [3] and its most populous city is Wathena. As of the 2020 census, the county population was 7,510. [1] The county was named after Alexander Doniphan, a Mexican–American War hero.

William Henry Perkins, better known as "Moccasin Bill" Perkins (December 24, 1825 – November 13, 1904), was a frontiersman, scout, and hunter. [1] Born in Indiana, he learned to trap and hunt as a child when the area was a wilderness.
The town was a contender for county seat of Pottawatomie County but lost to St. George in 1861 and Westmoreland in 1882. [4] On November 8, 1875, Louisville was struck by an earthquake. [4] In 1882, with the county seat in Westmoreland and the Union Pacific Railroad built through Wamego, the town's population swiftly declined.

The town of Holcomb was thrust into national and, eventually, international notoriety after November 15, 1959, when four members of the prominent Clutter family (father Herbert, 48; his wife Bonnie, 45; their youngest daughter, Nancy, 16; and son Kenyon, 15) were found bound and shot to death in various rooms of their home, on the family's River Valley Farm on the outskirts of Holcomb.
