Author: RayH. We did a fair amount of railfanning on Sand Patch in the late 70's, and the symbols you mentioned brought back a lot of memories. Back in those days, it was really easy to get symbol help from the operators at Hyndman and Viaduct Junction. I remember one symbol for a Cumberland - Buffalo freight, Empire State Special.

Chessie System used Kabel > Bold for their logo and for reporting marks on rolling stock, > but used Helvetica for cab numbers (I think). Conrail used > Futura Bold for everything. Family Lines used something similar > to City Bold. CSX and Chessie used different style numbers on the cab, so if CSX uses Helvetica, Chessie didn't.

Here, passing "R" Tower on CSX's Cumberland Sub at MP 113.6. 9:33AM on 3-1-92 in Cherry Run, WV. 2. After running around its train, CSX SD40-2-8252 is now leading on train 556 for the trip to Philadelphia.
