IIHS is the one I value when looking at cars. 23. Award. Share. [deleted] • 2 yr. ago. NHTSA tests are a little more basic (head on, side impact, rollover), while IIHS does more real world (offset crashes and other testing). I would try to read the details of the IIHS results more, to understand why it was or wasn't a Top Safety Pick.
Yes, but safety ratings are misleading. A Honda Fit and an F-150 are both going to get 5 star ratings - but in any given crash, the F-150 is likely going to fare better and do a better job of protecting its occupants based on its height and mass. “Top Safety Pick+ 😎” doesn’t reflect that. However, the new 2023 Pilot is based on the same platform as the new MDX for 22', which scored really well. Honda said they were targeting a Top Safety Pick + and a 5 Star Rating from the NTHSA, which might indicate that preliminary testing was very good. The 2022 older generation pilot scored poor in the updated moderate overlap front test due ...

2024 Toyota Grand Highlander fails to get IIHS Top Safety Pick. Tl;dr, it fell short in it's small overlap crash test. "In the driver-side small overlap test, the safety cage protecting the driver was somewhat compromised.
UPDATE: I’ve reached out to IIHS - they anticipate the 2024 Santa Fe cash test results to be published late April/ Early May 2024 :) I’ve been wondering the same thing because I also want the Santa Fe in the calligraphy trim and this website says it has a 5 star safety rating, so I’m assuming it’s other ratings will be good as well ...

How do you interpret & apply safety ratings such as IIHS? For example, Mazda CX90 is a top safety + pick, and Volvo is a XC90. If your main differentiator to buy a car was safety, would you always chose the Top Safety + pick (over the non- plus)?
