The Cheverolet motor option was the 2.8L V-6 which was gone by the time your XJ was built. The major difference is that the Chevy motor was a cross flow design where the AMC motor is not. Both intake and exhaust are on the driver's side of the block.

I figure if someone makes a good cam and cylinder head it would add a good 40- 50 horsepower and torque. All these rice burner 4 bangers got high performance engine interals, why shouldn't Jeep. Jeep Turbo's cost Too much, and air kits and headers don't make noticeable power.

Popular things include intake, exhaust, headers, throttle body spacer, throttle body, and a chip. Of those, only the headers/exhaust and chip are likely to result in any noticeable gain.

I was really going to do the 4.0 head swap, and injection, and I even pulled the parts from a ZJ, but I came across the engine and trans for too cheap to pass up and plans changed. All that said, I agree with the head swap, but change out those gears I think, and it'll bring the acceleration back.
